We fell in love with the wildness and beauty immediately on our first trip to La Verendrye. You can read about that trip here: La Verendrye Trip #1. Three weeks later we went back and were again spoiled by the pristine water, private waterfront camping and solitude!
Our plan this time was to leave from Le Domaine again, and over three days, paddle Circuit 15, a loop of 45km. Setting out mid morning, our first day, onto Lac Jean Pere we were hit by high winds and rolling waves which tossed our canoe around like a toy boat. We managed to bushwhack onto an island and wait out the storm in our tent but with nerves already frayed we settled on Circuit 10, 24km, a much more manageable and relaxing distance for the rest of our trip.
Over the next two days the sun slowly crept out behind the dark clouds and we were once again treated to the magic of La Verendrye.
The best thing about the storm is that in our rerouting we found our favourite campsite…probably ever! Right in the narrows of La Baie Menard, on top of some sturdy Canadian Shield and surrounded by forest, this campsite is the perfect place to spend an afternoon post paddle. And the perfect place to watch the sun go down. And its a private campsite to top it all off! (Not that that seems to matter in La Verendrye-in 3 days we saw a handful of other paddlers and all from a distance).
We even had some extra time to cook up a new dessert-Chocolate filled Bisquick pancakes-Amazing! Any chocolate concoction seems to taste so much better in the wilderness.
Next summer can’t come soon enough!
